For this extension project at the UK’s most significant Jewish cemetery and burial site, construction included two new prayer halls and a series of service buildings. The project was the first new consecration of a United Synagogue burial site in the UK in 50 years.

P3R Engineers designed a system to provide natural heating and cooling throughout, alongside energy efficient lighting and a state-of-the-art security system. The heating and ventilation design took advantage of the high thermal mass in the rammed earth walls. For cooling and moisture reduction when the prayer halls are occupied, roof fans are triggered by temperature and humidity controls. A photovoltaic (PV) roof supplies power to the electric heating system, and subtle, low energy lighting was designed to accentuate the calm internal environment. We also developed cost-effective security systems, installing CCTV and intruder alarms throughout.
