Kendrew Quadrangle, the new college quad at St John’s College, Oxford, provided 70 student rooms, library and archive, café, function room, gym, seminar and teaching rooms. The brief was for an exemplar in low energy and sustainable design, which was achieved through Passive House levels of insulation, heat recovery ventilation, low energy lighting, and rainwater harvesting. Four renewable technologies were adopted – solar thermal, PV (photovoltaics), ground source cooling and biomass heating.
