The National Science and Media Museum, part of the Science Museum Group, explores the science and culture of image and sound technologies. Originally opened in 1983 as the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, this latest refurbishment has upgraded the visitor experience, with improved foyer space and accessibility, and the opening of the new Sound and Vision galleries to showcase the museum’s permanent collection. Housing 500 exhibits over two floors, the Sound and Vision galleries contain objects and interactive displays that depict the history of analogue to digital media technologies.
To ensure both sustainability and functionality, our engineers developed a low carbon building services strategy that creates optimal environmental conditions for the galleries’ displays and occupants, whilst also accommodating flexible use of the spaces. The upgrade of existing building services includes replacement of the existing ventilation plant with heat recovery air handling units and efficient LED lighting, helping to reduce the building’s overall energy demand and supporting the Science Museum Group’s efforts to achieve Net Zero by 2033.
