Mansion House is a Grade I listed building, originally built as a home for the Lord Mayor of York completed in 1732. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the ‘Opening Doors’ project allowed for Mansion House to be opened to the public for the first time.

The original eighteenth century kitchen was restored to fully working order, as well as improved displays and access to the civic collection of gold and silverware. A new environmental control system, regulating temperature and humidity, minimises long-term damage to the contents and fabric of the building, and reduces its carbon footprint. Air source heat pumps replaced the existing electric storage heaters, and all lighting was replaced with LED sources.
